The Malay language is recognized as the national language and is enshrined in Article 152 of the Federal Constitution. Malay literature has been the heritage and core of the nation since centuries. We should be proud of previous great works such as Sejarah Melayu, Hikayat Hang Tuah, Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa and others. The essence of local literary work is laden with elements of value that become a symbol of Malay identity.

Hence, efforts to uphold the Malay language and local literature should be played by all parties. Malay was once recognized as a lingua franca once and is widely spoken. In fact, the Malay language proved to be a language of knowledge and a source of unification of the Nation of Malaysia. Malay literature, on the other hand, is very rich in local elements which makes it very unique in the eyes of the world.

In the increasingly complex digital age, efforts to uphold Malay language and literature should be intensified. Writers and publishers should continue to move with the times. The new landscape of digital development should bring Malay language and literature to a better landmark. The role of Malay language and literature cannot be denied even when we are in the age of science and technology. Malay language and literature should be iconic in the face of increasingly concased globalization.
